Debt can affect any one of us. Yet for many people, the shame and stigma surrounding money worries stop them from reaching out for help.

This Debt Awareness Week (16–22 March 2026), we’re tackling the issue head-on — because no one should struggle alone.

Debt is More Common Than You Think

New national polling shows that debt is far more widespread than most people realise.

More than half of people in the UK have experienced problem debt at some point in their lives. That’s millions of people — friends, colleagues, neighbours, and family members — all facing similar challenges.

Debt is not a personal failure. It’s a common experience, often caused by life events outside our control, such as:

  • Job loss or reduced income
  • Rising living costs
  • Illness or caring responsibilities
  • Relationship breakdown
  • Unexpected expenses

If you’re struggling, you are not alone — and support is available.

But Stigma Keeps People Silent

Although many people say they would talk openly about money worries, the reality is very different. Almost half (44%) of people who have experienced problem debt told no one about it.

This silence can make the problem feel even bigger. Debt can become overwhelming when people try to face it on their own. Without support, it’s harder to find a way forward, and worries can quickly affect mental health, relationships, and overall wellbeing.

Debt Awareness Week is about breaking that silence. By talking openly and encouraging others to do the same, we can help more people get the support they deserve.

Why Breaking the Stigma Matters

Removing the shame around debt helps people:

  • Reach out earlier
  • Understand their options
  • Access free expert advice
  • Reduce stress and isolation

Every conversation helps shift the perception of debt from something to hide, to something that can be managed with the right support.
